Dear GCC Parents, Guardians & Students,
GCC students at the BT Young Scientist exhibition in Dublin this week
Early Wednesday morning the group of students and teachers met with anticipation at Kent Station Cork where they got the train to Heuston Station Dublin before heading the RDS to set up their project displays. The exhibition opened with a ceremony in the afternoon and a speech from the President Michael D Higgins. The first judging of student’s projects then got underway after the opening ceremony. That evening students attended the BT Young Scientist disco for all students. On Thursday each project was judged a further two times. The exhibition was open to the public and was attended by many schools and guests such as politicians including the Taoiseach Leo Varadkar. In addition to projects, there were many interactive exhibits to visit and events to watch in the concert hall. Students’ projects were well received and praised by judges and the public. They also attracted the attention of the national media. At time of writing (Thursday evening) both students and teachers are looking forward to the rest of the exhibition including the awards ceremony which will take place on Friday evening. All projects and students have been great ambassadors for Glanmire Community College. Please click on the following link to view the list of projects displayed by our students: BT young scientist GCC

Charitable Refunds – CHY 3 Forms Parents of 6th Year Students
As you are aware schools are recognised as eligible charities and GCC makes an annual charitable refunds claim to Revenue based on the voluntary contributions parents make to the school. This has no implication whatsoever for the person who makes the contribution. Completion of the form is part of the enrolment process to the school in 1st Year. Unfortunately, the initial form only covers a student’s first 5 years in the school because not all students will enter TY. Therefore, we are obliged each year to ask the parents of 6th Year students to complete a new form in order for us to be able to claim against their payments.
This morning at tutorial we distributed CHY3 forms to all our 6th Year students and have asked them to be returned again to Class Teachers on Monday morning at registration. The form is just one page (see link below) and we hope that a short turn around will help maximise the number of forms we receive back. We thank you for help in ensuring this significant source of funding to the school is maximised to the fullest possible extent.

GCC VSware Attendance App
We are grateful to parents for their continued high level of engagement to date with the VSware Attendance App. Parents who have not downloaded the app are kindly asked to do so as a matter of priority. It is our intention that during the month of January in the New Year the app will become be the only method for parents to indicate their child’s absence from school. It is also our intention this month that students will sign out at the office via the app and that parents will not be required to come into the school office to collect them.
Parents are reminded that:
- You can send a notification to the school via the VSware app (available on the IOS App Store or Android Play Store) informing us that your son/daughter will be absent from school.
- The VSware app sends a notification following the first class period (usually between 9:45 and 10am) to parents whose child has been marked absent from school without a parental notification.
- You can use the app to respond stating that your child is absent from school and why.
- If your child is in school/was dropped off, this will allow us to immediately check and approve his/her attendance, reassuring you.
- If a parent does not respond to the app notification, a text message is then issued a half hour later.
We would like to thank parents for your continued cooperation as we work to improve our attendance monitoring procedures.
