Dear Parents/Guardians & Students,

Return to school

We were delighted to see all our students returning to school this week following the Summer holidays. We would especially like to extend a warm welcome to all our 1st Year students who started with us on Tuesday. We will help you to settle in over the coming weeks and with the support of your classmates, our staff and all in our school community we will give students the best opportunity to be engaged and positive about their learning. We look forward to the school year ahead.

A heartfelt thanks to our GCC Parents Council who worked tirelessly during a number of days over the Summer to ensure our books were ready for students to collect at the start up. We are always grateful for the support our parents offer across so many areas of school life. Our thanks also to Ms Fitzgerald for coordinating the Book Rental scheme.

Leaving Certificate Results 2023

We would like to congratulate our 2023 Leaving Certificate students on their exceptional results in the State Examinations which they received on Friday 25 August. The consistent upward trend of our results over the last number of years continues, with over one fifth of our students achieving over 500 points. At the top end, results continue to be outstanding with 7 students achieving in excess of 600 points including two receiving 613 points and one student attaining the maximum 625 points. Our tracking and monitoring of student attainment indicates that over 50% of our students performed above ability in the State Exams with over 85% of students overall, performing to or above expected levels. With a complete data profile of our pupils developed (based on STen scores, CAT Assessments, term assessments and SEC exams) we can say with certainty that GCC is impacting positively on the outcomes for the vast majority of our learners.

We would like to acknowledge the role of parents who have ensured students were constantly supported throughout the two years of the Senior Cycle programme.  We would also like to thank our fantastic teaching staff who engage so positively with our students, thus ensuring they achieve the best possible learning outcomes. Thank you to our SNA staff for their invaluable work (both seen and unseen) in helping all our students but especially those students with additional learning needs.

VSware Communications Package

Parents are asked to note that the school will be introducing the VSware communications package this month. Among other functions the package allows for parents to make absence requests (for example medical appointments) and notify the school if their son/daughter will be absent from school for the day. Once our 1st Year parents are set up on the system we will provide parents with a user guide. In the interim all parents are asked to download the VSware app to their phones.

Labelling of School Items

As per our update in June, parents are kindly requested to ensure that all uniform items (and especially the school jacket) are labelled with your child’s name. This will assist us in the prompt return of mislaid or lost items.

School Car Park

We would like to thank parents for their cooperation with our entry/exit system to the school car park. A reminder that:

  • From 8.30am to 9.10am Monday to Friday the school car park will be entry only. The exit lane from the car park will be closed at these times.
  • From 3.30pm to 4.10pm Monday to Thursday and 12.30pm to 1.10 pm on Friday the school car park will be exit only. The entry lane to the school car park will be closed at these times.

We would be grateful if parents could remind students

  • to use the pedestrian footpaths and not walk along or between cars when entering/leaving the school
  • use the pedestrian gates only and not enter or leave the school via the main gate

These small few steps will help ensure added safety for our students when accessing the school grounds.
