Dear Parents/Guardians & Students,

Misneach

Misneach is a Glanmire Community College initiative aimed at promoting a more inclusive and integrative school community that celebrates, supports and challenges all groups within our school. This initiative was set up during the last academic year but was not developed due to school closures.

We would like to thank the students and teachers who were previously involved for their valuable contributions. The Misneach group invites any interested students to express an interest in joining the Misneach team. All students interested in becoming a member of the Misneach team must complete the Google Form application, link below.

All student applications must be submitted before 1pm on 10/12/2021

Christmas Assessments

Once again this year the school has opted for a combination of Classroom Based Assessments for 1st, 2nd & 4th Years and traditional formal exams for 5th Years following a designated timetable. The start date for 5th Year exams will most likely be Wednesday 15 December while Classroom Based Assessments will take place between Tuesday 14 December and Monday 20 December (dates to be confirmed).

With regard to Classroom Based Assessments we have asked our teachers to make every reasonable effort to spread the exams/assessments over the allocated period. We are conscious of overloading students with too many assessment tasks in too narrow a window. To this end, where it is possible (based on the timetable) we will designate specific days for assessment of some subjects. Subjects that are not allocated a specified day will follow our established practice whereby all 1st & 2nd Year base classrooms will have an Assessment Exam Timetable/Template displayed in the classroom. As dates and times are being allocated for assessments we have asked teachers to enter this information on the template so that all teachers and students can be aware of exam/assessment load. We have asked our teachers to please consult with students when finalising dates. Christmas Assessments are not to take place outside the agreed window.  We have also asked all our teachers to engage students in active revision up to their exam and to continue to teach their curriculum after the assessment is complete. More information will follow next week.

FUSE Parents Anti-Bullying and Online Safety Webinar

Glanmire Community College is delighted to be a partner school with DCU Anti-Bullying Centre (ABC) delivering the FUSE Anti-Bullying & Online Safety Programme to our Second Year S.P.H.E. students.

In line with FUSE recommendations, we support the UNESCO Whole Education Approach in tackling Bullying and Online Safety in our school, which is led by our students and where their voices are valued and heard.

Here are some of the key takeaways our students are learning on the FUSE Programme:

  • How to spot the signs of bullying both online and offline – RECOGNISE
  • How to take personal responsibility safely – RESPOND
  • How to “break the silence” – REPORT

There will be a free parents webinar on Tuesday, December 14th from 7 pm to 8 pm. To register for this event please click here.

Congratulations to our senior Camogie Team

GCC Camogie had a great win in the Cork Colleges Camogie Intermediate final. They defeated Gaelcholáiste Mhuire AG on a scoreline of 2-08 to 2-02 in a tight game played at Castle Road, Blackrock. It took a late goal to put any distance between the teams in a match that was always close and the outcome was in doubt until that late goal.
Three points from Sinéad Hurley gave GCC an excellent start but Gaelcholáiste Mhuire soon equalised with a goal and it took a point from Nessa Treacy to give GCC the lead before the first water break. A goal from Olivia McAllen saw GCC hold a 4 point lead at the interval, despite playing against the wind in the first half. Great credit to both teams for producing a good half of Camogie in very cold conditions.  The second half had just started when the Mon struck for a second goal to put the bare minimum between the sides. A second point from Nessa Treacy was answered with two points from Gaelcholáiste Mhuire to tie the game at 1-05 to 2-02.
From there to the finish GCC kept the scoreboard ticking over with points from Caoimhe Galvin, a third from Nessa Treacy and a free from Sinéad Hurley. Goalkeeper Ava McCarthy, Aishling McAllen, Ciara Rice, Eimear O’Callaghan, Leah Walsh, Kiera Mulcahy and Holly O’Mahony kept the North Mon forwards at bay until the late goal from Neveah O’Connell finally ensured that the cup was heading back to Glanmire. Hannah O’Mahony, Katie Daly and Isabelle Ryan worked hard to ensure the Gaelcholáiste Mhuire backs didn’t get any easy clearances.

Team: Ava McCarthy, Aishling McAllen, Ciara Rice, Eimear O’Callaghan, Leah Walsh, Kiera Mulcahy, Holly O’Mahony, Caoimhe Galvin (0-1), Sinéad Hurley (c) (0-4, 2f)Hannah O’Mahony, Olivia McAllen (1-0), Katie Daly, Isabelle Ryan, Neveah O’Connell (1-0), Nessa Treacy (0-3), Lauren Byrne, Izzy Brennan.
Many thanks to our mentors, Ms Byrne, Mr Kennefick, Mr Baldwin and Ms Kearney, and to the parents and staff who supported us on the day. Ní neart go cur le chéile.

TY Art Workshop

Our TY students recently completed an art workshop with artist Declan O Meara based on portraits. Well done to all in students who achieved excellent artwork. See below our students with displaying their great work. Thank you to Ms. Lynch for facilitating this.

Christmas Themed Day – Friday 10th December

All staff and students are asked to wear a Christmas themed item (e.g. Christmas hat, mask, accessory or jumper over students’ school uniform) on Friday 10 December. Class teachers are asked to collect €1 donation for Saint Vincent de Paul during Friday morning’s tutorial. Money bags will be given to each class teacher during tutorial. We would really appreciate it if class teachers would hand the money bags to Ms McInerney in the Staff room (C Block) or Ms O’Brien in B53, after tutorial. All money collected will be used to buy food vouchers for the annual SVP Christmas Hamper Appeal.

We hope you have a lovely weekend.
