What is Meitheal?

Meitheal is a programme run in GCC in conjunction with Scala Youth Ministry where ten 5th students work closely with the first year students. Justice, Compassion and Humility are the core values of the programme. The Meitheal team are trained during transition year and empowered to identify the needs in their school and to use their own initiative and talents to respond to these needs in a practical way.

Scala offers one day training sessions which are suitable for:

  • Student Councils
  • Mentors and Buddies
  • General Class Groups

Programmes cover the following life skills:

  • Principles of good Leadership
  • Communication
  • Conflict Resolution
  • Meeting and Facilitation
  • Team Building
  • Self Esteem

The Meitheal Youth Leadership Programme has been running since 1992. At present, students from twenty four secondary schools in Cork city and county are taking part. Through the four day intensive training, young people learn to identify needs in their school and to use their own initiative and talents to respond in a practical way.  It trains young people to be moral leaders, who, following the inspiration of the Prophet Micah become people of justice, compassion and humility.

Meitheal gives young people an opportunity to grow in awareness of themselves, and in the needs of others. It is not about focusing on standards, major events or results; it is about young people doing their best, caring for each other and growing in confidence of their gifts.
