4th Year Pupil/Parent/Teacher (PPT) Meeting

Parents are asked to note that our 4th Year PPT will take place in-person next Thursday 19 January. Since December the school has been exploring the option of holding our 4th Year PPT online using parent teacher meeting organiser (PTMO). Unfortunately, the necessary systems required to run the meeting cannot be in place before next Thursday.

Please note also that, as per DES circular M58/04, the school will finish for students at 3.35pm next Thursday with the meeting scheduled from 4.15pm to 6.45pm. Details of centres, registration, seating plan and other information etc. will be shared with staff and parents next Wednesday.

The remaining 1st & 2nd year PPT meetings for this 22/23 school year will take place in-person.

BT Young Scientists

Pictured today Friday 13 January at the BT Young Scientist Competition was Tanaiste and Minister for Foreign Affairs Micheal Martin with GCC students Robert O Halloran and Toby Tangey. Also included are GCC teachers Ms. Noreen Emerson and Mr. William Horgan. Well done to both students for being selected for the competition final and congratulations to Robert who achieved a highly commended award for his project.

National Youth Orchestra

Congratulations  to GCC students Conor (5th Year Rang Eanna) and Lia Glavin (4th Year Rang Niamh) who were both selected to play in the National Youth Orchestra of Ireland and performed at the National Concert Hall, Dublin on Wednesday 4 January. The National Youth Orchestra is an intensive orchestral training programme which takes place in December/January and July each year, creating opportunities for young musicians to engage with each other on a national level and to perform and interact with professional musicians and conductors. Their programme this January included works by Stanford, Tubin and Mahler under Estonian conductor Mihhail Gerts. Conor and Lia will look forward to rehearsing and performing again with the Nation Youth Orchestra next Summer.

Visit from Burnley FC Footballer former GCC Student.

Great to have past pupil and current Burnley FC footballer Alex Healy Byrne call back into the school today Friday 13 January. Alex is the first student from GCC to sign for a professional football club in England. Well done Alex, we are all extremely proud of you.

Glanmire Healthy Clubs

Please see below information on the Glanmire and Sarsfields Healthy Clubs initiatives; the Every Step Counts challenge and the Ireland Lights Up initiative. The four local GAA clubs are working together on this.

Basically, people can track their steps under My Life app the whole time, or on their usual tracker, which can be synchronised with the app. As well as being on purposeful walks or runs, your day-to-day steps around your house, or the school will be tracked too. Assuming you are registered to our Glanmire and Sarsfelds Healthy Clubs group, the distance you have walked or ran, will all count to our total. We are currently the leading club in Munster. Each step from everyone in our community counts.

In addition, under the Ireland Lights Up initiative, we commenced our weekly walks on Wednesday night. While the Every Step Counts challenge finishes on the 15 of February, due to the connection with RTÉ’s Operation Transformation, the Ireland Lights Up initiative will conclude on the 1st of March. We will walk every Wednesday, leaving the Sarsfelds clubhouse at 6.30 p.m. All are welcome.

GCC School Musical

A reminder that this year’s GCC TY school musical ‘Beauty and the Beast’ is taking place on Thursday 26 and Friday 27 January 2023.  This is our first live school musical since Covid. Students will be continuing rehearsals between now and the opening night then and we look forward to the singing, dancing, fun and laughter the the musical always brings to our school.
