Dear Parents,
Open Evening
We would like to thank so many of our students who helped in the preparation and running of our Open Evening last night. From moving of furniture, cleaning, making displays, meeting parents to provide information on different subject areas, our students were a credit to the school. Thank you also to our wonderful musicians who kept visitors entertained throughout the evening. We are very proud of our school and our students, and they were a credit to GCC yesterday.
We would also like to express our gratitude to all our staff for their efforts in ensuring our Open Evening was a success. Departments went above and beyond in showcasing the qualities of GCC and we received numerous comments from parents about the warm and welcoming atmosphere in the school.

We would like to express our good wishes to Robert O Halloran and Aoife O Donoghue, two transition students, who have entered the young scientist competition, with a project, entitled:
An investigation into attitudes and awareness towards pain-medication in 15-19 years.
This project, entered into the Social and behavioral Sciences category, aims to assess prevailing attitudes towards pain-medication in young people as future consumers.
We wish our students the very best of luck with their efforts.
My Brain & Me – The Science of Learning
Last week we directed parents and students to the www.learningscientists.org website. This week as part of our update we are providing details of a useful resource on retrieval practice. This resource is a 20-minute video by Kate Jones which provides an explanation of retrieval practice and how it can be used inside and outside of the classroom to support learning. The link to the video is below:
Retrieval Practice: A guide for parents, carers & families
Smart Screens
Parents are asked to note that data projectors have now been replaced in all of our B-Block general classrooms with Smart Screens. This is part of our school’s ICT strategy and will help provide high quality learning experiences for our students as teachers will have improved access to resources which can support learning. The high-quality picture and sound from these devices allied to the increased functionality of the screens should provide both students and teachers with positive and engaging learning opportunities.
