Dear Parents,
GCC First Year Reading Intervention 2023Information for Parents

Due to school closures during the pandemic, our first year students have missed out on developing some literacy skills in reading and writing that are essential for their academic success at secondary school. As a school, we have identified this issue, researched best practice and are putting in place a first year reading intervention to assist our students to get back on track and set them up for success going forward. Students will be assessed before February mid-term break to assess where they are with their reading comprehension skills. The whole first year cohort will then embark on a reading intervention which will run from after February midterm break to the end of the first term in second year. Please click on the following links to view  details of the initiative.

Cork-born poet EileánChuilleanáin visits Glanmire Community College

GCC was honoured to welcome Cork born poet Eileán Ní Chuilleanáin who spoke to 5th Year English Cert students on Thursday. President Michael D. Higgins once said of Eileán Ní Chuilleanáin: “Eiléan’s poems have, at their heart, an instinctive understanding of the importance of indicating the right of each individual mind to reflect on and see the world in its own way”.

When reminded of this, the Cork-born poet, who recently turned 80, says “All my writing life I have been accused of being rather obscure, and then people who wanted to put it nicely said that I was mysterious, and I think what it is, is that when I want to write about something it is because it’s a mystery to me, and I think maybe I can make this a little bit clearer.”

Eilean Ni Chuilleainain read a number of Leaving cert poems, inclusing “Street”, “The Bend in the Road”, Translations” and “On Lacking the Killer Instinct”.

School Musical 2023

We would like to congratulate all our staff and students on their outstanding production of our school musical Beauty and the Beast. We were so delighted to welcome back live performances to GCC following a 3 year absence. The atmosphere has
been electric around the school this week in the build-up and it has been wonderful to see all the hard work, dedication and fun rewarded.

We would particularly like to express our gratitude to Nicola and the team of staff involved in the production of our
School Musical. We are so appreciative of the commitment required and the immense positive impact it has on students who are involved. We would also like to thank teachers and staff from our practical departments who have been selfless in the
support given to the production. The quality of the stage design, costumes and props is of the highest order. The musical is always a highlight in our school calendar and we wish everyone well with tonight’s final performance.

Munster Senior Camogie Final
