Dear Parents,
CORK ETB Culture Day
This week is ETBI week where we celebrate the values of what it means to be an ETB school.
Tuesday was Culture Day in GCC where we celebrated the 26 nationalities represented in our school. First year students got to visit the multi-purpose room in the morning to view the student presentations and chat to the students about their countries. They will also present their findings in Geography and CSPE classes. The students involved created very impressive presentations, designed posters, made traditional food and wore traditional dress. The pride in celebrating each culture emanated from the room and it was an informative and enriching experience for all who attended.
First Year Reading Intervention
Our first years have been busy reading all week, with some class groups already through their first novel! Rang Fergal are currently leading the charge with most pages read and readtheory quizzes taken. A leaderboard is on display in the social area.
Next week, we will be arranging for some first year students to be withdrawn from their reading class to partner up with their TY reading mentor to do some paired reading.
A reminder to parents that as part of our first year reading intervention students will read four times a week for forty minutes in class. Each student has also been set up with a read theory account to practice non-fiction reading at home. All first-year students are encouraged to spend at least fifteen minutes, three times a week, using read theory at home.
As part of our literacy intervention, our TY students have organised a community book drive to gather sets of class novels for our reading community. There are seven book titles which we are looking for students/parents to donate, if they so wish. These are all novels that have been studied over the last five years in our school by our students so they might be sitting gathering dust on a shelf somewhere.
The Graveyard Book by Neil Gaiman
When the Sky Falls by Phil Earle
Once by Morris Gleitzman
Animal Farm by George Orwell
Noughts and Crosses by Malorie Blackman
Stone Cold by Robert Swindells
Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck
