The TY musical ‘The Wedding Singer’ took place on the 30th and 31st January 2020. Produced and directed by Ms. Nicola Swanton, The Wedding Singer, yet again, lived up to the high standard that GCC has set for the musical. Due to popular demand, extra seats had to be added on both nights and they were not disappointed as they were transported back to the 80’s when hair was big and shoulder pads were even bigger!
It’s 1985, and rock star wannabe, Robbie Hart (Conor Healy), is New Jersey’s favourite wedding singer. Accompanied by flamboyant George (Patrick Manning) and cool Sammy (Craig Cronin), they are the band that every bride wants. That is until Robbie’s own fiancée, Linda (Aisling O’ Connell), leaves him at the altar. Shot through the heart, and even with some wise words from his rapping grandmother Rosie (Lucey Moriarty) Robbie makes every wedding as disastrous as his own. Enter Julia (Laoise O’ Brien), a winsome waitress who wins his affection. As luck would have it, Julia is about to be married to a Wall Street shark Glenn Gulia (Max Crowley), and, unless Robbie can pull off the performance of a decade, the girl of his dreams will be gone forever. Julia, with the help of her cousin Holly (Lucy Dolan) and her overbearing mother (Sophie Daly), finally sees Glenn for who he really is; a money-loving jerk who is only All About The Green and nothing else. Holly and Sammy face their own love story and while it takes Holly some time to realise it, Sammy was the man for her-and he was right in front of her eyes all this time.
Resulting in a happy ending, the crowd were highly complementary of the performances from all the cast from main characters, to the dancing choreographed by Ms. Grainne Power. The high quality acting was supervised under the watchful eye of Ms. Nicola Swanton, Ms. Louise Purdy, Ms. Jill Manning, Ms. Lorraine O’ Sullivan and Ms. Angelina Howard. The beautiful set was constructed by Mr. Kevin Crowley and the set itself was designed by Ms. Sinead Kiely, Tyrese Raheem, Sean Power, Hollie Horan, Orla Kenneally, Alex Redmond, Kate Cogan, Nic Jelezoglo, Victor Orimolusi, and Benita Bazunu.
The cast of the Wedding Singer made their jobs exceptionally easy with their determination and enthusiasm, and worked hard from November to the end of January. From all in GCC, we would like to extend our congratulations to the cast of the Wedding Singer and remember, It’s Never To Late To Move That Thang!
